Historical Note

Fermilab's first director, Robert Wilson, chose to design Fermilab's Ramsey auditorium to accomodate not only lectures, but also artistic performances. The Fermilab Auditorium Committee was established in 1974 with Arthur Roberts as Committee Chair. While Ramsey Auditorium was used for some cultural events prior to the establishment of the Arts and Lecture Series, the first official Arts and Lecture Series season was the 1974 to 1975 season. Since Arthur Roberts was on sabbatical at this time, Al Brenner served as Committee Chair during the first season. After the end of the season, Janice Roberts again took over as chair of the Auditorium Committee and remained in this position until 1979. The following people also served as chairs of the Auditorium Committee: Jeff Appel (1979-1987), Stephen Pordes (1984-1985, during Jeff Appel's sabbatical), Nancy Carrigan (1987-1990), Morris Binkley (1990-1994), Al Russell (1994-1996), Fritz Bartlett (1996-1998), Jorge Morfin (1998-2000), Ray Yarema (2000-2004), and Henry Glass (2004-). Ruth Ganchiff, Janie (Green) Oldfield, Tammey Kikta, and Janet MacKay-Galbraith (1990-) served as Arts and Lecture Series coordinators.1

The Arts and Lecture Series is intended to serve as outreach to the surrounding communities, so events are open to the public. The Series was successful from the beginning, drawing large crowds and receiving recognition in the form of positive reviews from local newspapers and three consecutive grants from the Illinois Humanities Council to support their programming.2

The Fermilab Arts and Lecture Series has brought a wide variety of speakers and performers to Fermilab. Notable speakers include Luis Alvarez, Bruno Bettelheim, Jane Goodall, Stephen Hawking, Carl Sagan, and Stanley Tigerman.3 Notable performers include the Bolshoi Ballet, the Fine Arts Quartet, performances by the Guthrie Theater Foundation, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, and the Reduced Shakespeare Company. The Arts Series also regularly included "showcases" featuring several performers. Some of the most frequently held showcases include the Choreographers Showcase, the Folk Showcase, and the Jazz Showcase.4
