Biographical Note

Leon Max Lederman was born in 1922 to Morris Lederman and Minna Rosenberg and grew up in New York City. Lederman had an older brother Paul. Lederman attended PS 92 on Broadway and 95th Street for his primary education and continued his high school education at James Monroe High School in the South Bronx. In 1943, he graduated from the City College of New York with a degree in chemistry and a minor in physics.

In 1943, Lederman enlisted in the United States Army and served in World War II. During this time, Lederman was stationed in France and Germany and, because of his background in chemistry and physics, he was assigned as the head of the New Equipment Introductory Detachment, which was responsible for examining captured enemy equipment. Eventually, he rose to the rank of first lieutenant. Throughout his time in the military, Lederman also met and began to network with various physicists.

Upon his return, Lederman took advantage of the G.I. Bill and enrolled at Columbia University. Lederman openly discussed his struggle to complete his postgraduate degree. He worked with Gilberto Bernardini, who continually encouraged Lederman to become excited about science, more specifically physics. It was with this constant encouragement that Lederman completed his Ph. D. in Physics. After receiving the degree, Lederman joined the faculty at Columbia University.

In 1958, Lederman took his first sabbatical from Columbia University to work on a research project at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research. Upon his return in 1961, Lederman became the director of Columbia's Nevis Laboratory and held this position until 1978. In 1979, Lederman took an extended leave of absence from Columbia University to work for the University of Chicago. He also became the director of Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. Lederman served as director of the lab for 10 years.

In 1988, Lederman was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for his work conducted with Melvin Schwartz and Jack Steinberger. "They managed to produce a beam of neutrinos using a high energy accelerator. In 1962 they discovered that in some cases, instead of producing an electron, a muon (200 times more massive than the electron) was produced, showing the existence of a new type of neutrino, muonneutrino. These particles, called leptons, could be classified in families."

Throughout his entire career Lederman was a proponent of science and math education. He was part of the founding board that started the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy in Aurora, Illinois. He sat on many boards that promoted science education at all school levels. Additionally, he continued to teach at the university level throughout his career.

Lederman has three children with his first wife, Florence Gordon. His daughter Rena is an anthropologist, his son Jesse is an investment banker, and his daughter Rachel is a lawyer. Currently Lederman is retired and lives with his second wife Ellen in Driggs, Idaho.
