Biographical Note

John David Linsley was born on March 12, 1925 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. His father, James Adolphus Linsley (1893-1974), was born in Morris, Minnesota and worked for the Minneapolis Transit Company from 1923 to 1958 as a streetcar conductor. His mother, Martha Carolina Linsley (1893-1988, maiden name Wennerholm), was born in Follinge, Sweden and was a graduate of the University of Minnesota. He had one sister, Ruth Anne Linsley Forman (1923-2004).

Linsley showed intellectual promise at a young age and was homeschooled by his mother for much of his childhood. He also attended Vokes Elementary School (Nevis, Minnesota), Miles Standish Elementary School (Minneapolis, Minnesota), Nokomis Junior High School (Minneapolis, Minnesota), and Roosevelt High School (Minneapolis, Minnesota), from which he graduated in 1942. He attended the University of Minnesota from 1942 to 1944 and in 1946, graduating in 1946 with high distinction. While completing his bachelor’s degree, he served in the U.S. Army from June 30, 1944 to May 30, 1946 and was honorably discharged as a corporal.

Linsley married Betty Howard on August 4, 1945. They had a daughter named Joanna Marie Linsley on April 24, 1947 and divorced on April 20, 1949.

Linsley remained at the University of Minnesota after completing his undergraduate degree to work on his Ph.D. under the direction of Edward P. Ney. Under Ney, Linsley used balloon-borne cloud chambers and Cerenkov detectors to study multiply charged primary cosmic rays. While working on his Ph.D., Linsley served as a teaching graduate assistant at the University of Minnesota from 1947 to 1949. Additionally, he worked as a Research Graduate Assistant to O. H. Schmitt of the University of Minnesota in 1948, W. Ogle of the University of California in 1949, and Edward P. Ney of the University of Minnesota from 1949 to 1951. He also worked as a Research Assistant at Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory in 1949, a researcher at General Mills in 1951, and an Assistant Professor of Physics at the University of Virginia from 1951 to 1952. He completed his Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota in 1952, majoring in physics and minoring in mathematics. His dissertation was titled "The Influence of Nuclear Size on Meson Production at Very Great Energies."

After completing his Ph.D., Linsley remained at the University of Minnesota as a Research Fellow from 1952 to 1954 and served as a consultant to the General Mills Aeronautical Division in Minneapolis in 1953. In 1954, Linsley left the University of Minnesota for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he worked as a Research Associate from 1954 to 1955 and from 1958 to 1972. He also served as an Assistant Professor of Physics at this institution from 1956 to 1958. While at MIT, Linsley worked with a team led by Bruno Rossi at Harvard University's Agassiz Astronomical Station's air shower array to observe cosmic rays using ground-based liquid scintillator detectors. In July or August of 1955, a fire in one of the liquid scintillators set the work back several months and prompted the experimenters to develop plastic scintillators. The Agassiz array was the first tool capable of measuring the energy and direction of individual cosmic rays with an energy greater than 1015 eV. The spectrum was measured from 1016 to above 1018 eV. The methods of analysis developed by Rossi's group laid the groundwork for the analysis of data from future arrays.

Linsley married Lora Nalbandian (born 1930) on April 26, 1955.

In 1957, Rossi put Linsley in charge of designing a larger array of the same type as the Agassiz array, a project funded by the National Science Foundation and the Atomic Energy Commission. Linsley worked with Livio Scarsi from the University of Milan to build an array of nineteen 3.3 m2 plastic scintillation detectors at Volcano Ranch near Albuquerque, New Mexico. While they constructed the array, Linsley served as a Visiting Lecturer in Physics at the University of New Mexico from 1958 to 1959. The array became operational in the summer of 1959. Initially, the detectors were placed 442 meters apart, but this distance was later expanded to 884 meters, giving the array an area of 8.1 km2. In the summer of 1960, Scarsi left the experiment and was replaced by Peter Eccles.

Observations at Volcano Ranch extended the known cosmic ray energy spectrum, clarified the structure of extensive air showers, and provided the first experimental results on ultra-high-energy cosmic ray composition and arrival direction distribution. On February 22, 1962, Linsley observed an air shower created by a primary particle with an energy greater than 1020 eV, the highest energy cosmic ray observed up to that point. Linsley’s observations at Volcano Ranch suggested that not all cosmic rays are confined within the galaxy, as had been previously supposed, and provided the first evidence of a flattening of the cosmic ray spectrum at energies above 1018 eV. In 1964, Linsley was elected to Fellowship in the American Physical Society.

Linsley and Lora Nalbandian divorced on July 22, 1965. Linsley married Paola Quargnali (born 1940) on October 26, 1966, and they had two children: Amina Martha on March 3, 1969 and Alessandro Piero on December 9, 1974.

Volcano Ranch was transferred from MIT to the University of New Mexico in 1972. Linsley’s position as Research Associate for MIT also ended in 1972, and he took a position as Adjunct Professor of Physics at the University of New Mexico. His continuing work at Volcano Ranch was funded by grants from the National Science Foundation. Linsley was the Principal Investigator for this project, titled "Extensive Cosmic-Ray Air Showers." Between 1970 and 1973, Linsley changed the layout of the array by splitting the existing detectors into 80 smaller detectors of 0.815 m2 and placing them 147 meters apart to create a denser array of about 1 km2. This allowed him to study the lateral distribution of air showers in more detail. His observations led him to develop the elongation rate theorem, which describes the rate of the change of the atmospheric depth of the air shower maximum with the energy of the primary particle and has been widely used as a tool for organizing and interpreting data ever since.

In 1976, Linsley became Research Professor of Physics and Astronomy at the University of New Mexico. The "Extensive Cosmic-Ray Air Showers" project concluded in 1977, and when no further funding was available in 1978, Volcano Ranch ceased operations.

Despite the closing of Volcano Ranch, Linsley continued his work in the field of cosmic rays. In 1979, he proposed detecting the fluorescence created by cosmic rays in the atmosphere through the use of a space-based observatory, a project which he called SOCRAS (Satellite Observation of Cosmic Ray Air Showers). This was the first proposal of a space-based cosmic ray observatory.

Linsley also served as Principal Investigator for two research projects funded by the National Science Foundation titled "The Muon Component of Cosmic-Ray Showers" (1977 to 1982) and "Detection of Cosmic Ray Air Showers by Means of Atmospheric Fluorescence" (1983 to 1984). He was also a British National Science Council Senior Visiting Fellow in 1974 and 1982 and a Science and Engineering Research Council Visiting Fellow from 1984 to 1987, which entailed working on collaborative experiments at Haverah Park, UK using plastic scintillators under Principal Investigator A. A. Watson. In 1986, he was a Visiting Research Fellow at the University of Notre Dame, where he worked on Project GRAND. Additionally, Linsley collaborated on several other research projects, including the CYGNUS project for UHE Gamma-Ray Astronomy using the Los Alamos E-225 Neutrino Detector under Principal Investigator D. Nagle (1984 to 1987), the EAS-TOP project at Gran Sasso (1987), the PLASTEX project for Cosmic-Ray Air Shower Studies including UHE Gamma-Ray Astronomy under co-Principal Investigators L. Scarsi and A. A. Watson (beginning in 1988), and the MINI-SINGAO project for Neutrino, UHE Gamma-Ray, and UHE Cosmic-Ray Astronomy (beginning in 1988).

Linsley was nominated for the Nobel Prize in physics by Pierre Auger in 1980 and 1981 for his work with cosmic rays. He won the Premio Internazionale San Valentino d’Oro in astrophysics in 1981. In 1988, he became a Visiting Professor at the University of Palermo and a Senior Fellow at the Istituto di Fisica Cosmica in Palermo, Italy. In the mid-1990s, the idea of a space-based observatory gained fresh momentum with the establishment of the international AirWatch consortium. In Italy, this project was led by L. Scarsi, Director of the Istituto di Fisica Cosmica, and in the United States, it was led by Yoshiyuki Takahashi, a Professor at the University of Alabama. Linsley was actively involved in this project, which evolved into AirWatch-OWL, and in EUSO (Extreme Universe Space Observatory), another project to create a space-based observatory to investigate cosmic rays. Linsley spent much of his later years in Sicily and continued to publish until 2002.

John Linsley died on September 15, 2002 in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
