Biographical Note

David J. Ritchie was born in 1944 to Mary Louise Parker Ritchie and Robert Bowland Ritchie. He grew up in Kansas and had one brother, Robert.1 He received his B.S. in Physics from Carnegie Institute of Technology in 1966, his MS in Physics from Cornell University, and his PhD in Physics from Cornell University in 1971.2 His PhD advisor was Eugene C. Loh and his thesis was titled "Measurement of the Differential Cross Section for the Photoproduction of Eta Mesons at 4 and 8 GeV and Momentum Transfers from -0.3 to -0.8 (GeV/c)2."3

Ritchie was hired as a "Programmer II" by Fermilab in September of 1971. During his time at Fermilab, Ritchie was involved in many aspects of Fermilab computing. He made particularly significant contributions to MULTI, a data analysis program developed by J. Frederick Bartlett at CalTech, by creating documentation for the program and interfacing it with various data acquisition systems. In 1988, Ritchie was leader of the DEC Systems group within Central Facility Operations of the Computing Department. Between 1989 and 1990, Ritchie was part of Distributed Computing and served as DEC (Digital Equipment Corporation) Systems group leader, Distributed Software group leader, and a member of the Special Projects group. In late 1990, Ritchie became part of the Headquarters Staff where he was part of Applications and M.I.S. Projects. In 1990, Ritchie was also reclassified as a physicist. Ritchie became Fermilab's first webmaster in 1994. In 1993 or 1994, Ritchie became head of the Databases and Information Department and remained in this position until 1997 or 1998, when this department was dissolved and he became part of Online and Database Systems. In 2002, he became part of D0 Computing and Analysis. Afterwards, he served as part of the Facilities Group and later the Communications and Outreach Group.1

Ritchie retired in October 2011.4
