R.R. Wilson's Version of an Organizational Plan at Cornell University

I think my second foray into sculpture came in the Fall of '49 or early '50 when Cornelis de Kiewiet was the Acting President of Cornell. It was his mission to balance the budget (he was running hard for President) and he announced that all Department Heads and Directors would turn in organization charts so he would best know how the University actually worked and hence could make intelligent cuts in the budget. But on leaving Los Alamos I had sworn a mighty oath never again to make an Organization Chart. I was adamant although de Kiewiet put a lot of pressure on me to do my duty. He finally pointed out that all the other professors such as those in Literature and the Classics had submitted their charts and who did I think I was not to submit mine. In a compromising tone I asked him if another form of chart would be O.K. — yes he said, anything would do. Thus it was that I went into the shop and in an hour or so had fabricated an elegant "abstract organizational chart."
