John Anderson Jr. receives lifetime achievement award on accelerator safety

On Sept. 22, the DOE Accelerator Safety Program Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Fermilab’s John Anderson Jr. for his contributions to the DOE Accelerator Safety program.
Two or three individuals from across the various DOE and National Nuclear Security Administration accelerator sites receive the award every year. Nominations for the award are solicited from these sites and voted on by past recipients of the award.
Anderson volunteered his time to organize six different conferences and workshops for the Accelerator Safety Workshop and International Technical Safety Forum, including being the host for each of the events.
“John has been instrumental in implementing the Accelerator Safety Order at Fermilab and in the Accelerator Community in many ways,” said Fermi Site Office Facility Representative Mike Herr. “He’s participated numerous reviews to support accelerator safety and presented talks throughout the DOE complex and at international locations.”
Scott Davis, accelerator safety program manager in the DOE Office of Science, presented the award to Anderson at the annual DOE Accelerator Safety Workshop, which took place at Fermilab this year. Anderson and Fermilab’s Don Cossairt co-chaired the workshop.
This is the first time that a Lifetime Achievement Award has been received by members of the same lab in successive years. Fermilab’s Don Cossairt received the award at the 2015 workshop.
