Richard Auskalnis attended the University of Illinois, majoring in business administration, and worked in the Illinois Institute of Technology Research Institute purchasing department before joining the laboratory in April 1968. He became purchasing manager for the laboratory in November 1969. He served as head of purchasing until he retired in 1994.
