Giorgio Bellettini discusses CDF history and partnership with Italy – May 3

One of the stalwarts of the Tevatron Collider era, Giorgio Bellettini of INFN and Fermilab will give a colloquium on “The CDF Experiment and the Italians,” on Wednesday, May 3, at 4 p.m. in One West, Wilson Hall.
Bellettini was an initiator of the CDF (Collider Detector at Fermilab) experiment in 1980 and has worked on it full time since then. He had served as the co-spokesperson of CDF during the discovery of the top quark by the CDF and DZero collaborations in 1995. He has now returned to take the helm of CDF as co-spokesperson in its final phase of completing the analyses of data taken during Run 2 of the Tevatron and their publications.
Bellettini helped recruit Italian scientists to join the CDF collaboration as it was forming in 1980-81. At the peak of its data-taking effort, when CDF had 650 physicists, there were well over 100 Italian physicists in the collaboration. In 1984, Bellettini also started a summer program for Italian students to participate in various projects at Fermilab. The program continues today, bringing dozens of Italian undergraduate students each summer to Fermilab, and it has been a great success.
In this colloquium, he will recount the history of the CDF experiment, highlight the scientific discoveries and talk about the contributions of Italian physicists to CDF’s extremely successful scientific adventure.
