Benjamin W. Lee served as head of the lab's Theoretical Physics Department from 1971 to 1977. He was born in Seoul, Korea and came to the United States as a student in 1956. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1960. He played a key role in shaping the lab's Theoretical Physics Department. After he was killed in an automobile accident in June 1977, the lab held a memorial conference in his honor in October 1977.
