New Staff Appointments at Fermilab [excerpt]

P. Livdahl

In the Accelerator Division...

Philip V. Livdahl has been appointed Head of the Fermilab Accelerator Division. He replaces Paul J. Reardon who leaves Fermilab in June to head a fusion reactor development project at Princeton University.

Livdahl has been at Fermilab since 1967 when he began as Associate Head of the Linac Section. He served later as head of the Linac Section, then as one of the associate heads of the Accelerator Division when the Linac Section combined with several other sections in 1971.

Phil received his degrees at St. Olaf College and at the University of Washington. His accelerator experience began in 1948 when he started work as a graduate student research assistant and helped build a cyclotron at the University of Washington. Since then he has been associated with the design, construction, and operation of four linear accelerators at the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory, Livermore, California, and with the Zero Gradient Synchrotron at the Argonne National Laboratory.

The Accelerator Division under Livdahl will continue its drive to increase the intensity and energy of the accelerator. "I am sure the people in the Accelerator Division will continue the progress which has consistently challenged the experimental program. Achievement of these goals is getting tougher but the talent and determination is here and I am confident that we will succeed."
